UPDATE TIME!
Remember last week when we were like "expect more regular updates from us!" and then immediately sent out another update with a corrected link? This update is what that original message was supposed to mean. More frequent actual content updates!
This week we finished going over all the monster statblocks and are now editing (and in some cases, creating) ecology for every single monster in the book! We're about 2/5ths of the way done with that and expect to be starting on editing our 14 subclasses and general player options this upcoming week!
Below you can find one of our favorite finished Monsters. To be clear, the layout of this will NOT match what it'll look like in the book, this is just a little something we threw together for you all as a treat because we like you so much.
We posted about this on January 5th, but Jaron was a little slow on editing the actual backerkit postage (SORRY GUYS! I have to do it manually for every shipping profile and that is a LOT), but what you see in Backerkit is now the accurate shipping rate for anybody who bought add-ons.
AS A REMINDER: if you ONLYhave books in your order, you will be receiving a discount code from us BEFORE we charge cards for shipping, which will decrease your shipping rates to media mail rates (typically less than $5, depending on weight). We have spoken with Backerkit several times, and unfortunately they do not have a system in place to charge media mail rates for folks who only purchased books. But the discount code is a work-around we came up with to make sure you're ONLY paying the required shipping.
For those of you who have already confirmed your survey, you may have to open it up and re-confirm it to update your shipping costs.
As stated in previous updates, we will NEVER try to make money on shipping. We only want the shipping rates we charge to cover the cost of mailing the object to you, and the very small handling fee that goes to our fulfillment partner who are the very wonderful folx who actually ship the books and other items out to everyone. Thanks for your understanding! Please message us with any questions you may have, and we'll do our best to respond as quickly as possible.
Conclusion
We hope everyone has a safe, fun, and wonderful Single's Awareness day! Just as a heads up, there's a few of us on the Action Fiction core team (*wink wink*) who are currently untethered to life partners so like... if anybody knew anybody who was single and wanted to talk about TTRPGS 24/7, enjoyed long walks from our dayjobs to our nightjobs, and can stand how weirdly familiar we are with each other, hit us up on our Discord...
...If we're not your cup of tea, there's a lot of amazing people on our server, and even If you just wanted to access all of the playtest material for Restaurants and Retail, playtest Goblin Cave (our upcoming MOBA-inspired Board Game), talk about our upcoming Murka expansion Chromatic Gamut (which you can apply to write for by following the link in this post), share in our dank memes, or be part of one of the best communities on the net, that's cool too.
Expect another update in the next week or two.
Love to all of you for all you do,
Brad Roberts
FEBRUARY UPDATE!
– Sat, Feb 06, 2021 at 12:44:37 PM
Greetings All!
It's your allegedly-favorite TTRPG editors here to update you on everything going on with Action Fiction!
First up, the thing you all actually came here for...
Restaurants and Retail editing update:
We have successfully finished all the items and spells (of which there are a LOT) and are currently about 20% of the way through the monsters and lore section. Because of our desire to get the Monster, Spell, and Item cards done as quickly and efficiently as possible, we decided to do these, some of the most difficult sections, first. As such, it would be appropriate of you all to expect the editing process (and update frequency) to increase in speed from here on out :).
Also, to prove that we are all working ourselves into an early grave on this, here's an incredibly sexy, absolutely 100% non-staged candid photo we took of ourselves during one of our late night edit sessions, as well as some finished items and their art (one of which features our very illustrious backers!)
Three tired looking individuals gather around a caffeinated-beverage covered table in front of laptops. There is a stack of reference books, 2 of which are opened, being looked at. All three are hard at work on something.
The Ahegao Jerkin, a piece of leather armor that makes everyone, including your allies disusted with you, making it harder for allies to interact with you but also harder for enemies to hit you.
The art of the Ahegao Jerkin shows that it is clearly based off the ahegao-face covered hoodie of infamy. It adorns a balding white male with arms raised in excitement next to a dissapointed looking drow woman with her hand covering one eye in shame.
The Sniffer Rifle is a gun that instead of shooting a bullet allows you to know what someone far away smells like.
The Sniffer Rifle is pictured, a long musket-adjacent thing with a nose on the end absorbing a scent and sending it back to be expelled at the user.
The Big Gay Reveal:
Congratulations on being among the first to find out that submissions are now officially open for those interested in writing for Murka's next expansion (which will be much better organized than this one has been), THE CHROMATIC GAMUT!
For those worried, the 'Powers That Three' (that is the three individuals pictured above) will continue to work exclusively on Restaurants & Retail editing until it is completed, and what we've been internally referring to as The Big Gay Expansion is being worked on by a separate team of individuals. Headed up by Bailey Megrian and Bag of Snails (two of our writers from our past books). The Chromatic Gamut will be set in Magnamalus (Murka's New York City equivalent) and will feature an exclusively LGBTQIA+ team of 8 writers. The book will focus on Queer experienes written by Queer creators! If you're interested, submit your name for consideration by following this link! We encourage new or experienced writers to apply!
OBLIGATORY GOBLINCAVE UPDATE:
Goblin Cave, Action Fiction's first Tactical Board game, inspired by your favorite MOBAs and inhabited by some of the cutest champions ever, has ongoing playtesting!! Additionally we just released 2 new classes for playtesting, the Blademaster and the Knight! Additionally-additionally, here's some art for the game that we are especially proud of! Want in on the action? Come join our Discord!
Remmy Nox, Goblin Warrior and Goofy Guardian, Stands ready in to defend his home in the same pose pictured twice, one with an axe and one with a sword.
A Screecap from TableTop Simulator picturing Goblin Cave's set up and assets, a tactical board, dice, decks and figures on a wooden table.
Autumn Ivy, Adventuring Warrior and Tattooed Traveler, Stands wielding a wicked looking axe in both hands, lidded eyes looing forward in a haunched stance, with short red hair.
Conclusion:
Overall, everything seems to be ramping up for Action Fiction, and over the next several months we hope to get into your hands a great many of our products. We thank you all for your patience over the last two months; between some of the struggles each of us have been facing, the weather, the pandemic, and some health and life issues that nobody saw coming, it’s really been your consistent support and communication (and the support we’ve received from our Discord community) which has kept our spirits high enough to keep doing these 8-hour editing nights three nights a week.
We know it’s taking longer than we’d planned, and we sincerely apologize. This is our second book, and we’re still learning a lot (and growing a lot, which makes some of the stuff we learn become obsolete ridiculously fast). We always welcome and appreciate your feedback. We’ll be posting more frequent, smaller updates as we continue forward.
Yours,
The Action Fiction Faction
In Cartoon form, the Action Fiction Faction is presented. From top left to bottom right a blonde woman with blue eyes [Adelaide] stands with her arm around a lanky green-eyed glasses individual [Jaron]. In a black Legend of Zelda shirt a brown haired, bearded man stands next to them [CJ]. In the next row down there are two figures: a kneeling, fully bearded, brown-haired, skinny man holding a trumpet and standing in a classic Lucky Luciano pose [Adam]. Next to him stands the world's friendliest, green-eyed, blue and orange accented witch [Bailey]. In the very bottom row, looking over their shoulder is a pale haired, blue eyed, blue shirted individual with almost as much mischief in their [Manny’s] eyes as their crouching counterpart, crouched next to them. That individual sports a devilish goatee, a long black mane and Chuck-Taylor adjacent footwear. Their crouch at once tells you they are up to no good, but that it's probably for your own good [Tim]. Lastly seated with one knee up and one knee down is a purple-and-blue-haired individual with a full beard who has clearly never had a thought in his entire life. He smiles at you, warmly, welcoming you into the fold, probably with snacks based on the pudge around their middle [Brad].

Hi Y'all,
So, in our stress-riddled minds we totally goofed and posted the link to the Prompt for Chromatic Gamut's application but not the application itself.
Here is that link, along with all the Chromatic Gamut information and our sincerest apologies for the confusion.
Headed up by Bailey Megrian and Manuel Steven Olonia(two of our writers from our past books). The Chromatic Gamut will be set in Magnamalus (Murka's New York City equivalent) and will feature an exclusively LGBTQIA+ team of 8 writers. The book will focus on Queer experienes written by Queer creators! If you're interested, submit your name for consideration by following the above link! January Update - More shipping stuff in here!

Hey Friends,
Brad here, wanted to give you all an update on how things are going on production of Restaurants and Retail now that the Holidays are over.
In short, not great. As we enter December 36th of 2020, we find that of the 3 people that are doing the Weedits:
1 member contracted COVID and has had to quarantine
1 member was in a Car Crash
1 member had a sudden change to 12 hour shifts at their day-job
This has made meeting our hopeful deadlines difficult, nigh impossible. We are doing everything we can to get this product to you as fast as we can without compromising ourselves (and therefore the quality of product that will eventually be in your hands), and are proud to announce that every spell that will appear in the book is now totally ready to be laid out, as are half of the items! Because you're special and we value you incredibly, here's a sneak peak at three of 'em pre-layout:
Ever wanted to know what your Meatloaf was thinking? Now you can. Spoiler Alert: It's waiting for the end of time!
Some think this spell can be cured by plucking fresh money from a tree!
Speaks for itself
Shipping Stuff
Additionally we've got a shipping cost update for you! Right now, it looks like the solution will be two-fold:
- A flat $3 cut across all shipping fees for all backers
- Any backer whose rewards can be shipped via media mail will be provided an account credit BEFORE their cards are charged, so that their shipping costs are calculated as Media Mail (This is the only way to get media mail rates to work right in BackerKit, unfortunately).
Media mail rates will be between $5.80 and $8 (depending on location).
We'll work on rolling out this change over the next week, and we'll post another update when it's done.

Quick update on Shipping Costs (GOOD NEWS)

I think I found a way to make shipping cheaper!
We heard you loud and clear, the shipping rates were much higher than you were hoping for. We calculated those using the weights of our books and basing that on Priority Mail rates, which is how our fulfillment partner Nord Games typically ships non-book products. FORTUNATELY, however, our products are... well, books! This means, we're likely able to use Media Mail for US customers, which will dramatically lower shipping costs.
It's going to take me some time to rework our shipping tables in BackerKit (I am but one man working these shipping tables, and I just started working 12-hour shifts at my day job this week), but I promise I will rework those as soon as I am able! Likely over the next week, wherever I can find some off-time to take care of it. Right now, I'm waiting on an email back from a BackerKit representative to see if we can somehow parse out those of you purchasing ONLY books, and apply a Media Mail rate to you. This would mean folks with non-media add-ons will still have to use weight-based shipping. But, until I have specifics, I won't know - it might go better, or worse, than that. My promise to you right now is that I'm hearing you, and I'm gonna do everything in my power to look for ways to get that cost down. Our intention is absolutely not to make money on shipping. That would be quite silly.
Thanks, gang, for voicing your opinion and working with us. You have been heard, and I will keep you posted on how this process goes! Please be patient in the meantime!
